* అప్రతిమానమైన కళాకారుల, ప్రతిభావంతుల కథలు
* తమ శౌర్యంతో తెలుగు జాతికి వన్నె పెట్టిన వీరాంగనల కథలు
* పరిశ్రమకి, డిగ్నిటీ ఆఫ్ లేబర్ కీ పెద్దపీట వేసి సోమరితనాన్ని తెగనాడిన కథలు
*తెలుగువారి ఆపేక్షలనీ, అంత:కరణలనీ పట్టి చూపించే కథలు
* స్త్రీవాదపు కథలు
* యువతీ యువకుల కొత్త దాంపత్య ధర్మాలను అందిపుచ్చుకున్న కథలు
* గడుసు కబుర్ల కథలు
* తెలుగు పోకడల కథలు
* ప్రతీ మాటా తేనె పట్టులా ఉండే కథలు

The New Internet Will Make You Sad Forever - by Sam Biddle

The web used to be about other people. IMing your friend, emailing your wife, a chatroom with other guinea pig enthusiasts. Now it's turning around. Information is becoming less important than emotion—the web is an empty nostalgia factory.

When everything is worth becoming a memory, what's that say about remembrance? If everything is the object of nostalgia and reminiscence then I don't really know what those things mean anymore—it would seem to be nothing. We're reaching that point.

Technology has not only made it easier to long for the past, it's made it tempting—and at times unavoidable—to strangle ourselves with an overload of fake nostalgia. Through their abundance and laxness, memories have been cheapened like few other things by the internet by sites like Timehop, which unifies existing nostalgia feeders into a daily digest of your social media footprints. Its creator calls it a "digital wave of nostalgia"—reminders of where you checked in, what you photographed, and what the weather was like a year ago each day are served up automatically. "Memories delivered daily to your inbox!" A bar I checked in to a year ago. I forgot about it. Now I remember. Proof that I existed a year ago—something to grasp. "A daily email that brings it all back to you," Timehop calls itself. All of what?

We Instagram our burgers, our trips to the mall, our beers, our sunsets.
We check in to every trivial appointment, errand, and coffee on Foursquare.

And now, Facebook has turned into the largest, clearest mirror ever produced by the internet, expressly designed to chronicle our lives—and to dig deep down into the primordial muck of our social ancient history. With a few clicks I can pore over every exchange I had with every freshman year dorm friend, every high school well-wisher, every photo with a fake friend I met at an internship, and the rest of the detritus and minutia.

There's a great deal of beauty in Timeline—but it simultaneously holds all the dreck that we have no reason to revisit, spread across a gilded platter and garnished quite nicely. I love Timeline—I use it daily. It's an extraordinary creation, and yet I know there's something a little perverse about wading through page after page of status updates from years and years ago. But I keep going.

We spoon feed ourselves these bites of personal history because everything happens too fast to eat something better. The web churns, and we churn with it—our lives are often accelerated beyond the ability to stop and appreciate anything, let alone discern the meaningful.

So to compensate, we apply filters to our photos to make them look old, worn, and cherished, we leave breadcrumbs on Foursquare so we'll remember that time we got a danish at the airport, and we swan dive to 2007 on Timeline, swimming with photos and messages of people we have no reason to acknowledge anymore. The result is the devaluing of everything we do. We ought to feel nostalgia for our old bedrooms, a good New Year's Eve, or someone we won't see again. These singular things capture the Greek algos in nostalgia—the pain of something of significance that we can't have back. But you can always go grab another sandwich, no matter how remote it looks in that Instagram.

There's no reason to think this will slow, or even reverse. We're addicted to artificial nostalgia, we're sad without it, and getting a quick fix is effortless. But truth be told, we may be just as sad with it, constantly cast backwards into memories of trifling bullshit. It may be sad to feel like we're sprinting through our high tech lives without milestones, but it could be far, far more depressing to look back fondly on a fucking caffè latte.
Wandererhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08968018823070030584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19760148.post-34472400513991645082011-12-20T10:49:00.000-06:002011-12-20T10:49:49.861-06:00A thought for Dhanurmasam - Him or His?
Once upon a time, there was a wealthy kingdom. The king ruled justly and the ministers worked hard. It was the responsibility of the treasurer of the kingdom to go to all the villages in the kingdom once in every 6 months to collect taxes. He would take a small troop of soldiers with him to guard the treasury box filled with money. He would always make sure that he reached the capital before dark and would never travel when the night fell. He didn't want to attract the attention of thieves and robbers who would way-lay anyone travelled through the jungles after dark.
Once, the treasurer somehow got delayed on the way. He was travelling through a forest and it was getting dark. Suddenly, from somewhere a group of robbers came and attacked the treasury convoy. The robbers outnumbered the soldiers. A fight ensued. As they were fighting a fierce battle, six young men came and joined the soldiers. Five of them fought valiantly with the robbers. The sixth man took the treasury chest with him on a horse, reached the capital and brought more soldiers with him. The robbers were all caught. The king was very pleased with the six young men. He praised the service rendered by them to the kingdom and said he would grant each of them one wish.

The first young man said, "My house is in a very dilapidated condition. Can you build me a brand new and strong house please?" The king said of course, he would.

The second man said, "I have a good house. But I don't have any money. Can you make me a wealthy man?" The King said he would gladly do that.

The third man said, "I want my family to be respected by all. Can you please confer the honor of knighthood on me and my family?" The King said it is a simple wish and he would fulfill it.

The fourth man said, "I have everything except one thing. I am in love with my neighbor's daughter and want to marry her. My neighbor doesn't like me. Can you influence him so that he would give his daughter to me in marriage?" The King smiled at this and said he would definitely do that.

The fifth man said, "I don't want any of these material things. I want to do some service to my village. The roads leading to my village have gone bad and full of potholes. Can you please get them repaired?" The King said it is a noble thought indeed and that he would happily fulfill it.

The sixth man was quiet all the time. When his turn came, he didn't say anything. King asked him what his wish was. The man hesitated and said, "You should not get angry at hearing my wish. You should not deny it either. Give me your word to that effect and I'll tell you what my wish is." The King hesitated. The man said, "Don't worry o King. I won't ask for anything that's beyond your capacity. I'll only ask for something that you can easily give." The king thought for a moment and agreed. The man said, "O King, I wish for your company for a week every year. You should come to my house and live with me for a week every year." The king granted him the wish.

Everybody in the court thought the sixth young man to be a fool. But very soon everybody realized how intelligent he was.

Since the King would visit him every year and stay for a week in his house, his small dilapidated house was replaced by a big palace. He was given wealth to be able to host the king. His friends, relatives, villagers, and everybody in the kingdom started respecting him because of his friendship with the king. The king felt it is inappropriate to come and live in a common man's house every year, so gave his daughter to the man in marriage. Now the king had no problem being a guest in his son-in-law's house.

What is the hidden meaning of this story?

The first man wanted "good strong house". We ask God for strong body and good health.

The second man asked for "wealth". We ask God to give us money, cars, jobs and other material things.

The third man asked for "knighthood". We ask God for respectability and honor in the society.

The fourth man asked for "fame" (through social service). We ask God for fame all the time.

The fifth man asked for "wife and children". We ask God to bless us with children, grand children, etc.

But the intelligent sixth man didn't ask for any of these things. He asked for God Himself. Once he got God, he got everything that is God's. So, we all need to make this choice. Do we want Him or do we want His?

You can clearly hear the heart-beat of the city as soon as you get down the train in Howrah station. I haven't seen so many people out on the streets in many years. The breeze is luke-warm and humid. The cabbie who was driving me to the youth hostel was an expert. I say this because he drove through a narrow street that has wholesale shops and warehouses on both sides with big trucks parked on the street, yet made it in 25 minutes to the hostel.

The Youth Hostel is located in a residential area. After dinner, I went out for a stroll and the scenes I encountered were truly a feast to the eyes. It's like the clock has turned back to several decades. The streets are really narrow and the houses are huge mansions. The streets are dimly-lit by tall lamp-posts that are old-fashioned and ornate. Most of the intersections are not the regular 4-way ones. Sometimes it is three roads meeting and sometimes it is five. There is usually a Banyan or some big shade-giving tree in the intersection which has a platform built around the tree trunk. I saw middle-aged men and retired men sitting on that platform in groups and chatting away leisurely. If you stand there and lend a ear, you'll hear conversations flying from topic to topic touching politics, art, music, economics, research, globalization... what not. The thing that amused me the most was that these men brought bottled water to drink. They came prepared...... I saw many men dressed in dhoti, some even younger.

In many cul-de-sacs I have seen carrom boards and players. The carrom board is usually set up in a strategic position like under a lamp post, with a bright lamp hanging very low onto the table from the post, casting shadows on the players lending an enigmatic aura to them. There are four players and another six people or so sitting and watching them... or may be waiting for their turn. I haven't seen any liquor shops but I have seen many carrom clubs and street-side carrom boards. Kolkata has a love affair with carroms.

Another interesting feature of the city is the number of cats. Bengalis are obviously fond of cats and consider seeing a cat first thing in the morning a good omen. I guess there is a geographical reason for this. China and North-Eastern states of India have the custom of treating a cat as a sacred animal.

I went to Maidan in the afternoon. The subway ride reminded me of New York. I finished my work at US consulate and started walking by the Victoria Memorial Gardens. It was just 3 in the afternoon and already there were many people sitting in the park. They didn't look like unemployed people to me. The ladies looked like working women with their hand bags and lunch boxes. The men had office bags or briefcases in their hands. It was a mystery to me. If these are working people, how come they are here in the park at this hour of day? It is a week-day and not a public holiday either. I saw many young people, mostly students walking into the park hand in hand. Are the colleges closed too? I'll never know the answer. Groups of people just sat there under the trees on the benches and chatted away happily. I really envied Kolkatans. They live a life of leisure and happiness. When was the last time I went to a park with my friends and had such talks? Another thing I noticed and report with a little shyness is - the couples I saw always held hands while walking, young and middle-aged both alike.

People in Kolkata are die-hard fans of theatre. In the present day of film industry dominating all the art-forms, they still kept the fire of theatricals going. Whenever there is a play in an auditorium, it is sold out completely. The auditorium management arranges for speakers outside the auditorium for the benefit of the people who couldn't get the admission for the play. You'll see many people standing outside the auditorium or perching on the walls nearby listening to the play. The manager of Youth Hostel was telling me that every year, many people from other countries come to Kolkata just before the Autumn and stay for 4-6 months to learn music, dance, painting, acting and other fine arts. This city is still a hub for art and culture.

Kolkata has so many facets - looks very conservative when you see young men in dhotis and young widows looking so widowed, and looks very modern and liberal when you see the subway trains, couples holding hands, young women dressed like film stars.

At the end, the only thing I didn't like in Kolkata is the Rikshaw that's not pedalled, but hand-pulled.
Wandererhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08968018823070030584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19760148.post-1170108089901088762007-01-29T14:51:00.000-06:002007-11-14T09:13:26.208-06:0075 years Of Telugu Cinema - Mixed Feelings
The degeneracy is rampant ! Yet, everyone stopped to commemorate the maestros of the Telugu cinema. Jandhyala was completely forgotten (till Brahmanandam mentioned him) while Silk Smita got a mention in the departed actors section. Bapu and K Viswanath honored but JV Somayajulu forgotten. Chiranjeevi and Mohanbabu engaged in an uncouth and ridiculous squabble. On the whole the celebration was a fiasco. But some aspects of the function stop you from calling it that - like Balu's anchoring and presence of great personalities like Bapu, Viswanath, and the stars that lit up the silver screen in the yesteryears.

Topping all this agony, I happened to see the following film summary (Veerabhadra) in a popular telugu website yesterday.

I was horrified when I read the last line in the review. My horror stemmed out more from the review than from the actual film dialogue itself. In case the image above is not clear, let me write it again -

As far as I remember, the word "అలరించడం" was used in the context of good music, good cinematography and good dances in a movie... some times a good sentiment brought out by an actor or actress's performance. Since when has this word been used in describing violence?

"బృందావనమది అందరిదీ" అన్న పాటలో సావిత్రి నటన ప్రేక్షకులను ఎంతగానో అలరించింది - I can make sense of this line. But the above line completely beats me. A deep sigh escapes you when you think of the industry - where it started and where it's going. The golden period is certainly over!
Wandererhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08968018823070030584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19760148.post-1162077106377577012006-10-28T15:24:00.000-05:002006-12-21T16:34:39.846-06:00Jasmine Vs JewelI went to see Ramaa Vaidyanaathan's bharata naatyam concert last Saturday. It was a memorable experience. All the while I was watching the performance, I couldn't help compare it with another dance concert called "Silappadikaaram" my friend and I saw a few months back. These two concerts are very different - Silappadikaaram is a full blown dance ballet with scores of dancers and stage decoration and props etc., whereas Ramaa Vaidyanaathan's performance is a solo dance recital. Except for the fact that both are bharata naatyam performances, there is no comparison between the two. But Silappadikaaram has become a yard stick to me. After watching it, I started comparing every ballet, every solo performance with it.

I watched another Odissi ballet called "Rudrakshya" a month back. It had five male dancers and four female dancers performing various items, some all-male, some all-female, and some combination. There was a male dancer called Lingaraj Pradhan who caught my attention immediately. He looked like "Radha" in male disguise. They performed a couple of items about Lord SriKrishna and Gopikas in Brindavan - one dancer portraying Krishna and the rest as gopaalakas and gopikas. Lingaraj Pradhan looked like he is a gopika. He was not at all effeminating. He is as masculine as they come. But when he dances, that far off look on his face, that smile touching the ends of his lips, that light in his eyes, that gaze filled with devotion makes you wonder if he is really a gopika in disguise and is beholding Krishna in front of him right there and then. I have never seen a person transforming so much, crossing all the barriers of gender, location, space, and time and becoming someone else... so convincingly. It didn't appear like he is a dancer performing and emoting on the stage. It appeared like a gopika trapped in Lingaraj Pradhan's body is pouring out her devotion.

Many times, our own state of mind, sentiments, emotions, feelings flow out and create an aura around people and make us think that we are watching their performance where, in fact, we are watching our very emotions being enacted by them. We see things in the light of our own emotions. But that was not the case here. It was not my imagination. Lingaraj Pradhan was truly showing the audience glimpses of his soulful performance.

I drifted. The topic of this post was not Lingaraj Pradhan. The topic is Ramaa Vaidyanaathan. The concert's highlight was the varNam. She chose Swati Tirunal's "Saatura Kaamini" set in Kalyani and performed that item for almost an hour. The theme of the varnam is the dancer addressing Lord Padmanabha and pleading on behalf of her friend who is in love with Him.

The song says - "O Lord Padmanabha, my friend is madly in love with you. She is consumed with desire and has become very weak. You're the master of all the worlds. You take care of every single creature in this entire universe, yet you are not seeing her misery and removing it. She cannot take your separation anymore. Oh lord adorned with Kasturi on forehead, the fragrance of Kasturi is making her miserable with your thoughts and separation. Be compassionate. Don't disappoint her and remove her misery."

Ramaa Vaidyanaathan's choreography and performance to this song was so original and beautiful that it brought tears to eyes a few times in a span of 45 minutes and made a lasting impression I will cherish for the rest of my life. The moments I remember vividly even after all this time are -

While doing sanchaari for the word "sakala lOka naayakaa", Ramaa shows different living beings in the world such as animals, birds, humans and enacts how Lord shows love for them. She depicted Krishna taking care of the cows, petting parrots, embracing gopikas and thus making all of them happy. At one instance, She became a cow. I cannot forget the way that cow raised its head and gazed so soulfully to get Krishna's attention. You can see the love, loyalty, devotion and innocence in that cow's gaze. Ramaa disappeared and Krishna's cow appeared there. It was magical.

Another highlight was the way she depicted the girl smelling Kasturi in a dream-like state and going after it. The girl is already suffering pangs of separation from the lord. She sits in a garden pining away for him and falls unconscious. In that state of unconsciousness, she smells Kasturi. Do you remember how they show in the movies a heroin sleeping and her soul raising from the sleeping person and going around singing a song with the hero ? You can see both the sleeping heroin and the soul heroin in the same frame. That is made possible with the technology there. Here, on the stage, Ramaa makes you feel like there are two persons. One is unconscious with greef, and the other one is raised from unconscious person and goes in search of the source of kasturi fragrance. I couldn't believe my senses. That was the greatness of Ramaa Vaidyanaathan.

Finally the girl finds the source of Kasturi fragrance. She sees lord and embraces him with joy. The fragrance is transfered to her body. She starts smelling like him. And suddenly he disappears from between her arms like a dream. And the unconscious person wakes up. Next morning her friends take her to the river. They all are about to get into the water for a bath. The girl refuses to bathe because she doesn't want to part with the fragrance on her body that reminds her of her closeness with the lord. This was a scintillating moment in the entire performance. I believe I saw a few wet eyes including mine.

Ramaa Vaidyanaathan's speciality is, she doesn't rush with her mudras and abhinayam. She gives it time to register with the audience. Each mudra is performed with such leisure and perfection that you can appreciate the beauty and the technique. Each expression and emotion is performed with such clarity that you get time to relate to it and experience it yourself. You soak yourself in the performance and at the end feel like you've performed yourself. You come out of the concert hall blooming and engulfed by the fragrance of the devotion.

Silappadikaaram is a fast-paced ballet with zero-defect perfection, crying beauty and blinding brilliance. It will leave you breathless. I kept comparing Silappadikaaram to the concert and at the end of the concert, the conclusion I came up with is -

Silappadikaaram is a jewel and Ramaa Vaidyanaathan's concert is a rare fragrant Jasmine.

If you are still curious about Lingaraj Pradhan, I still maintain that he is a gopika who got lost and is trying to find her way back to Krishna.Wandererhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08968018823070030584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19760148.post-1160788770840393132006-10-13T19:21:00.000-05:002006-10-13T20:27:36.846-05:00This man is my heroDr. Mohammad Yunus, a professor, economist and banker from Bangladesh was announced as Nobel Peace Prize winner for 2006 today.

Why did they give it to him for "Peace" and not for "Economics" ? You'll love the answer - "Because he worked to remove poverty and removing poverty is key for maintaining the world peace". In the Nobel laurate's own words, "Lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty".

It all started with 27 dollars. Dr Yunus once met a woman who makes beautiful chairs and stools out of bamboo and sells. He came to know that she makes just 2 cents in the whole day out of this business of hers. He didn't understand why anyone with such wonderful art and skill should work for such pittance. She told him that she doesn't have enough money to buy bamboo. So, she has to borrow money from a trader who loans money. The loan condition is that she has to sell him the finished product at the price he decides. As a result, she never made more than 2 cents on her work. The money she borrowed is less than 20 cents.

Dr Yunus asked his student to research and find out how many people are there, in need of small amounts like this woman. He came up with a list of 42 people and the amount of loan they needed to put their lives on track is a mere 27 dollars. Dr Yunus loaned them this money out of his pocket. This enabled them to sell their product whereever they got a good price. He later approached banks to ask loans for the poor people and the banks turned him down saying the poor are not "credit-worthy".

This was the beginning of "Grameena Bank" started by Dr Yunus for giving small amount loans (microcredit) to poor people. This started way back in 1974 and now Grameena bank has over 30,000 thousand branches in villages of Bangladesh. They lend money to over 1.5 million borrowers. The average loan is 75 dollars. Repayment rate is 98% . This bank works exclusively for the poor people. The Grameena bank's microcredit model has been exported to poor nations around the world.

While the traditional banking system is designed to be anti-poor and anti-women, Dr Yusuf's revolutionary microcredit banking system is exclusively designed to empower poor and women in particular. That is why I say the Nobel peace prize can find no better candidate than Dr Yusuf.

Lastly, this great man says he wants to start a company that makes low-cost, high-nutrition food for poor with the 1.4 million dollar Nobel prize money. He wants to construct an eye hospital to serve poor with the remaining money.

Isn't he your hero too ???Wandererhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08968018823070030584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19760148.post-1157728327149691612006-09-08T08:42:00.000-05:002006-09-08T12:26:12.620-05:00A Million PiecesIf a book has ever made you so mad you wanted to tear out the pages, well... here is your opportunity.

The controversy over the book "A Million Pieces" by James Frey caused the publishers DoubleDay and Anchor Books to take an action that was unheard of before - Refund the Books. Anybody who is not happy with thier purchase of the book can send the publishers page 163 or the coverpage torn from their copy and the publishing house will reimburse their $23.95

Background:

This book is categorized as non-fiction and is a memoir about James Frey's days when he was an alcoholic, drug addict and criminal. The book was so powerful and shell-shocking that it became an instant success.... to the extent that Oprah Winfrey selected this book for her book club. James Frey was hailed as "The man who kept Oprah awake at night". The book sold more than 3.5 million copies and was a runaway hit.

Later, after a six week investigation, it was proved that Frey had fabricated and embellished many of the incidents and memories in his book... just for the shock-value. The memoir was after all not completely true. Parts of it was fiction. Same of the readers who were in awe for the book felt they were defrauded.

Argument:

I honestly didn't understand this part. What was the complaint again? That the memoir was not honest? What did the people who bought the book paid for? For the author's honesty or for the content of the book? If I want to pay for a book of facts, I would go buy Guinness Book of World Records, or a text book of Science or Mathematics. If I bought "A Million Pieces", it is because the book shocked me, impressed me and the something in the book appealed to some sense of mine. If these were the reasons, why should I feel so disappointed and cheated when I come to know that some of the incidents in the book are fictious ? I would rather feel happy that all that misery was not true, some of it was just invented to take the "craft of shocking" to higher levels.

I applauded the author in the first place for his forceful and power-packed style of writing, not for his drug-addiction or alcohol abuse or criminal record. Those just were the tools he used to convey a story. The expression and style was what the book sold for, not the facts or fabrications.

When people in Oprah's show and outside lauded the book as revelatory, emotional and nothing like they ever read before, the book served its purpose. How does it matter whether what's written in it is a fact or fiction?

I have a feeling some people are pissed at this book because it made them applaud and hail the guy for no good reason. You see, it's like this - "I cried for you and sympathized with you because you were an alcoholic criminal drug-addict. Now that I know you are none of the above but just a plain liar, I'm not THAT impressed with you anymore. How dare you make me cry at a pack of lies?"Wandererhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08968018823070030584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19760148.post-1157050751316888892006-08-31T13:58:00.000-05:002006-09-08T08:42:04.736-05:00RandomThere are dreams to fill the heart
And love to make it bleed
But sadness is a different animal altogether
So keep a friend to beat it

--------------------------------------------------

The fragrance of the moon-lit night beckons me
Colors, dreams, scintilating desire, stabbing pain
This fragrance has everything in it...

This fragrance opens doors to the forgotten memories
Of all the unfinished sojourns that once hugged my feet

This fragrance that made me abandon my home
And wander about to get a glimpse of bliss
Has filled my every pore and every crevice
To make me sparkle and melt in the sweetness of it

---------------------------------------------------Wandererhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08968018823070030584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19760148.post-1137537498602658702006-01-17T16:37:00.000-06:002006-01-17T16:38:18.613-06:00Jana Gana ManaThis really brought tears to my eyes...

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7399792002477900458Wandererhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08968018823070030584noreply@blogger.com
